Valentine’s Day Movies Top 5 to Watch and Top 5 to Not

Valentine’s Day has always been a time of the year when people express their love for their significant other. It is a widely celebrated day by many couples. Everywhere you go, you will see advertisements such as commercials, Valentine’s cards, flowers, etc. There are many different ways to enjoy a romantic day together. Often many enjoy going to the movie theater and having a romantic dinner, but some just like to save a few bucks and have a nice home-cooked meal, stay at home and watch a romantic movie together. While there are plenty of movies that a couple can enjoy, there are also plenty of romantic movies that one would NOT enjoy. So, without further ado, here is what I believe to be the top five movies to see and not to see this Valentines season.

The number one film I recommend to watch during Valentine’s Day is “La La Land.” It is, in my opinion, the best movie of 2016. It is a film that perfectly describes the struggles of trying to maintain a healthy relationship, while also trying to achieve your dreams, but in the form of a musical.  A must-watch for couples that like realism in a movie and want to see very great performances by two of Hollywood’s biggest actors, Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone. Stone won the Academy Award for Best Actress in 2017, and the film had six Oscar nominations overall.

A movie that one should not look forward to seeing with their lover is: “A Star Is Born.” The 2018 film is what I believe to be one of the best of the year, but, it is also a film that will make you very sad and will have you crying by the end. It demonstrates hope, the struggles of addiction and how it affects your life or the people around you. It’s a great film to watch, just not this season.

One of the greatest films of all time, “Casablanca,” is truly a masterpiece. Released in 1942, it takes place during World War II and demonstrates heroism, romance, and sacrifice during one of the darkest times in history. It is about a man trying to help a former lover and her husband as they try to escape from Casablanca, in Morocco and fight off Nazis. A truly great film that will have you at the edge of your seat while also delivering a great love story.

Another movie couples should not see is “Valentine’s Day.” Although the movie has some of the most recognizable actors on the planet, sadly, that is all it offers. Filled with the same clichés you will see in other rom-coms, the movie lacks a true story point and is just a waste of a time to sit around and watch it. So save yourself and just give it a pass.

Unlike “Valentine’s Day” that also has an ensemble cast and a story that is all over the place, “Love Actually,” succeeds in delivering a truly memorable movie. Although it takes place during Christmas, one of the great things about the movie is its rewatchability, and the fact you can watch it any time of the year. It revolves around many different stories and characters and how they all connect through love during the holidays while giving you great humor. By the end of the movie, you’ll have a smile on your face.

Don’t avoid the movie “Her” because it’s bad. Don’t watch it because during a time of cheer and romance, the last thing you need is to feel lonely- which is what this movie achieves in a man who falls in love with an operating system through a female voice. The film describes the difficulty of trying to find love with someone you can’t see nor touch and how it affects life as a single person. It is a wonderful film, just not one to see during Valentine’s Day.

One of the best romantic comedies you’ll ever see, “When Harry Met Sally…,” is one to see during Valentine’s Day. It is about two people who meet sharing a ride together and how they continue to encounter each other over the years. They soon become close, and it starts giving thought to whether or not people from the opposite sex can be “just friends.” There’s great humor and a nice story that definitely makes this a worth-while movie.

Once again, “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” is a great film, just not to watch on a day filled about love and happiness. It is about finding love and sadly, about erasing all the fun memories you and that person created. After a man finds out that his girlfriend has undergone a procedure to erase all the memories of him, he decides to do the same, and she is also erased from his mind. The film explores love and regret, it’s just not one to watch with your partner.

Set during the Civil War, “Gone with the Wind” follows the daughter of a plantation owner who falls in love with a man who is going to marry another woman. She confesses her love to him, and he also falls in love with her even though he wants to marry his cousin. It later involves another man who goes on to be her true love interest. One of the greatest films of all time, it is a must-watch for anybody, even outside of Valentine’s Day.

“The Fault in Our Stars” another great film with an ending that will make you sad more than it will give you joy. Filled with love, and great performances, the movie is one I would recommend, just not on this day. It involves a cancer patient, whose parents send her to a support group and soon she falls in love with another cancer patient there. It is a great story that will make you laugh, smile, and also make you cry. Unless you want to cry, I would suggest you watch a romantic comedy to lighten up the room.
