May 14 marks a day of achievement for more than 440 KC Students. At 5:30 and 8 p.m., 299 students, along with approximately 60 faculty and staff, will participate in KC’s 75th anniversary graduation ceremony. Dr. Bill Holda, KC president, will be the speaker for both ceremonies.

Crosswalk at crossroads

Forty years after its completion, efforts are under way to make improvements to the bridge connecting KC’s east and west campuses. Because there is a sign ordinance and because the bridge crosses a Texas state highway, the Texas Department of Transportation essentially has jurisdiction over the bridge. TxDot has to grant the college permission to make any type of major visible alterations to the bridge.

The Legend of Gussie

This is part one of a three part series on looking back at the heritage of some of KC's legends. A banner proclaiming “A star was born and her name is Gussie Nell,” hangs on the red, white and blue walls of the Rangerette Showcase Museum. An oil derrick, women’s residence, various events and traditions practiced today serve to commemorate this campus legend and the impact she had on KC. Miss Gussie Nell Davis began her professional career as instructor of physical education and pep-squad director at Greenville High School in 1928. Drawing on her combined experience in music, dance and physical education, she trained the all-girl “Flaming Flashes” to use small wooden batons that she commissioned from a local furniture maker, as well as flags, various props, drums and bugles in increasingly complex dance-drills and marches.

Explosive device found on firing range

A possibly explosive device was found at the East Texas Police Academy's firing range. The two-gallon metal bucket filled with potential accelerants and a fuse was found at 9 a.m. Tuesday by a Texas Ranger at the front gate of the academy's Spear Training Facility, said KCPD chief Martin Pessink.

Region XIV Tourney | Rangers bow out early

For the second consecutive year, KC secured a spot in the Region XIV Conference Tournament. Unfortunately, for the second consecutive year, the appearance in the postseason was shortlived. Ninth-seed Jacksonville College upended the eighth-seed Rangers, 70-53, in Thursday's opening game of the Region XIV Basketball Championships tournament at the Herrington Patriot Center on the campus of the University of Texas at Tyler. Head Coach Brian Hoberecht coached KC to its first winning season since 2005-06, but several injuries depleted the team toward the end of the season.

With the Region XIV basketball tournament kicking off today, here's a look at the special playoff edition of the Flare with brackets and season recaps. The Rangers meet Jacksonville at 1 p.m., Thursday, March 4 at the Herrington Patriot Center on the University of Texas at Tyler campus Admission is $6 for adults, $3 for students and children (10-0) get in free. Gladewater sophomore Brandon Kegarise helped deliver a 10-pound baby by Caesarean section last week in Haiti. This week he is sitting in his classes at KC. “This was an experience that opened my eyes and I would recommend that any KC student, if given the opportunity, go to Haiti,” Kegarise said.

Ex-KC president contributed to financial stability

Former KC president Bert E. Woodruff died Saturday at his Kilgore home. Woodruff served as an instructor of business and a business manager for more than 40 years before being named the college's sixth president in 1989. During his four-year tenure, he was responsible for placing KC on firm financial ground and enacting policies which insured the future financial strength of the college. Woodruff is survived by his wife, Bobbie, and daughters Joy, Martha, Myra and Donna
