This holiday season, Student Government Association president, Elizabeth Luis, and Black Student Union sponsor, Monica Smith, are stepping up to collect toys as Christmas presents for the Boys and Girls Club of Kilgore. Toys will be collected throughout the whole month of November, and can be placed in collection boxes that are set up in the Game Room located in the Devall Student Center.
“When gifting the Boys and Girls Club a gift card as part of Golden Z, we learned that they did not have a sponsor this year,” Luis said. “Our goal is to receive as many toys as possible so we can make Christmas happen for these children.”
Luis and Smith are asking for brand new or gently used toys for any age. Wrapped in Christmas paper and sitting next to the Christmas tree in the Game Room are collection boxes for all of the toys. Where the boxes are placed, there are also angels with the name, age and wishlist of older kids of the club.
“These angels are in case anyone would prefer to sponsor one of the older kids, and just get that child something or everything of what is on their wishlist because they usually don’t receive much.” Luis said.
At the end of the month, the collected toys will be wrapped and then gifted to the children of the Boys and Girls Club the second week of December. A small event will be hosted as well so some of the children can come to campus to receive their gifts, making the experience something different as Luis said.
“We decided to take on this task, not for any recognition, but truly from the kindness out of our hearts,” Luis said. “In the future we hope this impacts others to make a difference in someone’s life.”
