A photograph by Glenda Derveloy, Henderson sophomore, was selected by actress Jamie Lee Curtis for the Childhood: An International Photo Exhibition. The Exhibition will be held at The Dougherty Art Center this month in Austin.
For Disney movie watchers, Jamie Lee Curtis is known as the mother in “Freaky Friday.” Behind the scenes, Curtis has a passion for helping children with many charities and authoring children’s books.
The actress is a spokesperson for CAAF (The Children Affected by Aids Foundation), authored a number of best-selling children’s books and recently served as a juror for the Childhood: An International Photo Exhibition.
“Childhood is fleeting — yet sometimes, in a fraction of a second, photographers can capture its essence: joy, pain, boredom, frustration, elation. As an author of children’s books I have tried to capture what it feels like to be a child — the good and the bad — and to stimulate a dialogue between children and parents regarding the issues raised in the book,” Curtis said.
Derveloy, a photography major, said her photograph was one taken impromptu.
“I walked into my son’s room one morning, and both the mom and the photographer in me could not resist setting my camera up and capturing the peaceful moment,” Derveloy said. “Three of my favorite things in life are represented by this photograph, my son, a beloved pet and the actual art of photography.”
The Texas Photographic Society offers juried exhibitions nationwide and now internationally.
“It means a lot to the photographers who are accepted and when one of our student’s work is accepted, it means a lot to our photography program here at KC,” said O. Rufus Lovett, photography instructor.
