Financial aid can potentially pay huge dividends for those who use it properly. Many people who have a college education have financial aid to thank for it.

On the flip side, financial aid can go swiftly from an investment to a mistake, sending students spiraling into a dismal financial future with little hope of escape.

CORSICANA – Perhaps Chase Fisher felt like he was still in high school.

Fisher, a former Kilgore Bulldog, spent much of Saturday throwing to Bulldogs from Navarro in the way of four interceptions in just over one half of play as No. 1 Navarro rolled to a 24-10 victory over KC in the Southwest Junior College Football Conference Semifinals.

KC, which lost to Navarro 42-17 earlier this year, ends its season 4-6, while Navarro College (10-0) moves on to face Blinn College (9-1) 3 p.m. Sunday in Corsicana for the SWJCFC title.

According to The College Board, in each year between 2000 and 2007 an estimated 60 percent of bachelor’s degree recipients took out student loans. In 2007-08, lenders provided a staggering $17 billion in private loans, up 592 percent from just a decade earlier.

On the surface, these numbers seem entirely plausible due to the soaring cost of higher education. However, we can’t help but wonder if this number is inflated by students who take out loans unnecessarily, simply because they are available.
